Bogotá, Colombia, July 15th, 2018 — This is an invitation to all professional and student artists, art directors, publishers and artists’ representatives to submit entries to the 1st Annual AExpo International Competition for Alternative Cultural Arts. All artworks in all media encompassing the themes of gothic fiction, horror, and the surreal are eligible for this event.

Since its launch on October 1st, 2010, Atmostfear Entertainment has garnered a loyal following by serving thousands of pages on a daily basis with the intent of generating additional work and exposure for the artists and authors selected for inclusion in its publishings. The circulation of Atmostfear Entertainment far exceeds those of other mediums and resource creatives of the genre; while deliberately maintaining a high-quality standard that makes it fitting for every kind of visitor.

Atmostfear Entertainment’s purpose and singular agenda is the promotion of alternative written content, visual arts and sonorities. We believe that Atmostfear Entertainment functions as a cost-efficient promotional medium and provides a bridge between researcher, scholar, reader, artist, and eerie aficionados. Atmostfear Entertainment is all about facilitating open access for creators, and growing the audience for alternative, historical and cultural work in all its forms, without pretension and without prejudice.

The largest of this field’s competitions is also the toughest to make; the act of entering visual art or manuscripts does not guarantee inclusion in the awards, or on the following live events. In truth, the “excellence bar” will be raised with every new edition: the responsibility of the jury to make selections will get increasingly challenging. Not being selected is not a personal criticism of the artist or author, but having your work chosen by the judges is of significance.

Join with us to help celebrate one decade of Atmostfear Entertainment with the awards and events premiere. Considering the excellence of the work published in the previous eight years, it will be no small task, but we are confident you all can do it.

The Call for Entries opens on October 1st, 2018. This is an invitation to all professional and student artists, art directors, publishers, and artist representatives to submit entries to a decade of Atmostfear Entertainment. All artworks in all mediums encompassing the motifs of gothic fiction, horror, the uncanny, and the surreal are eligible for this occasion.

Gothic horror art can be subtle or obvious, traditional or off-the-wall, painted, sculpted, done digitally or photographed: there is no unacceptable way to create art and there are no set rules that say one piece qualifies while another does not. Creativity and talent are what is more valuable.

Work chosen by the jury will be printed in full colour and exhibited to the general public, the peer-selected “best of the year” collection for gothic horror arts, besides published in an annual, illustrational book.

Eligibility

The competition is open to anyone eighteen-years of age or older, from any country.

Any published or unpublished art may be submitted in the appropriate category. Work must have been finished or first published in 2018.

Submission

Do not submit original art for judging: entry material submitted to the jury will not be returned. The jury will select works from the entries for inclusion in the Atmostfear Entertainment annual illustrational book; the act of entering gothic horror art in the competition does not guarantee inclusion in the awards. If your entry is accepted, be certain that a reproduction-quality digital file (400dpi, tiff file at 9″ wide or 12″ tall) is available to ensure the entry’s inclusion in the AExpo. Failure to provide reproduction quality material by the deadline given in an acceptance e-mail will cause an otherwise accepted entry to be excluded from the awards.

The person submitting work for this competition warrants that he or she is the copyright holder or has the permission of the copyright holder to enter said work and by so doing grants permission for publication in the AExpo annual art book and in the promotion of same. No other rights, either for print or electronic mediums, are granted to Atmostfear Entertainment, and copyrights will be acknowledged to the respective copyright holders within the content of the Atmostfear Entertainment annual art book.

The jury for AExpo 2020 will nominate the top two artworks in eight categories for consideration for either a silver and gold award.

Entrants

Only entrants whose works are selected by the jury for inclusion will be notified on the first semester of 2020 by e-mail, with additional information regarding what we will need for the annual art book. A list of accepted entrants will also be published on the Atmostfear Entertainment website.

Please check to see if your name is on the list before contacting us asking if you were selected for the awards. We will not be notifying entrants who did not have work selected: Only artists with work selected by the jury for inclusion in the annual art book will have their names listed on the website and will be notified by e-mail.

Categories

Entries will be initially divided into eight major categories. Members of the jury will judge each category objectively, keeping in mind the work’s intent and purpose in their decisions. Black-and-white, limited colour and full-colour works will be considered equally.

Advertising

Suggested entries include art for newspapers or magazines; posters for films, television or publications; packaging for video or music products; and art for brochures, billboards, or POP displays.

Books

Suggested entries include art appearing inside or on the covers of all hardbound or paperback books, including children’s books. No complete books will be judged as a single entry; multiple pieces from a book should be entered as a “series.”

Graphic Novels

Suggested entries include covers or individual pages from adult or children’s comic books or graphic novels. No complete comic books will be judged as a single entry. Do not submit work featuring license-protected comic book characters without the permission of said character’s copyright holder.

Concept Art

Suggested entries include work created for films, television programs, theatre or video games. Do not submit work that is license-protected without the permission of the proper copyright holder.

Artwork submissions are allowed for two years after the official release date of the product they were created for, to allow time for the permissions process.

Dimensional

Suggested entries include sculptures created for model kits, collectables, editorial or fine art. A maximum of three photos of a single entry (to show detail) may be sent.

Institutional

Suggested entries include art appearing in connection with announcements, annual reports, calendars, greeting cards, prints, portfolios, posters, plates, website graphics, collectables, promotional directories or self-promotion mailers, and any other venues not obviously covered by the other categories.

Unpublished

Suggested entries include art created for portfolios, student work, gallery shows, experimental studies, speculative assignments, and ongoing projects for work to be published at a future date.

The Annual Art Book

Each accepted entry will be reproduced in full colour and given complete credit in the first Atmostfear Entertainment book; the contact information for all artists or their agent/representatives will be printed in the artist index.

The person who has submitted an accepted entry will receive a complimentary copy of the art book. International residents are required to pay shipping. Tear sheets are not available. Additional copies may be purchased at a discount.

The Physical Awards

Each award will consist of a sculptured figurine on lucite on a stand, using a translucid triangular logo, based on the logotype of Atmostfear Entertainment. The award winner’s name, work title, award year, and award category will be etched on a small plaque on the base or on the plexiglass itself.

Each award will contain an authentication certificate.
