Edgar Allan Poe – ‘The Raven’ Book
$5.93
The narrative poem “The Raven” by American author Edgar Allan Poe. The poem, which was first published in January 1845, is well known for its melody, stylized language, and eerie mood. It describes a mystery visit from a talking raven to a hurt lover, illustrating the man’s gradual descent into lunacy.
The lover, who is frequently described as a student, is mourning the passing of Lenore. ‘The Raven,’ perched on a bust of Pallas, seems to exacerbate his sorrow by chanting the word “Nevermore” nonstop. Numerous folk, mythical, religious, and classical references are included in the poem.
In his 1846 follow-up essay, ‘The Philosophy of Composition,’ Poe revealed that he claimed to have composed the poem very logically and systematically with the intention of producing a poem that would appeal to both critical and popular tastes.
The poem was partially influenced by a talking raven in Charles Dickens’ book ‘Barnaby Rudge: A Tale of the Riots of ‘Eighty.’ Poe uses internal rhyme and alliteration throughout, as well as the intricate rhythm and meter of Elizabeth Barrett’s poem ‘Lady Geraldine’s Courtship.’
