Annual Dark Culture Awards
Obscaerivm
Obscaerivm
Honoring the creators, works, and cultural moments that illuminate the shadow — and refuse to look away from it.
Obscaerivm 2027 – The Vanguard Seal – The Obsidian Record – The Nocturnal Canvas – The Silver Void – The Celluloid Séance – The Grimoire – The Dark Rite – The Chronicle Pen – The Vestige – The New Shadow – The Congregation’s Seal – The Crypt’s Honor
What is Obscaerivm
The Independent Voice, Now With a Seal
We have, since our founding, chronicled the full spectrum of dark culture without concession — from the cathedral of gothic music to the uncanny of contemporary fiction, from the ritual of live performance to the philosophy buried in an album’s liner notes. Obscaerivm gives that chronicle a formal dimension.
Obscaerivm is an annual recognition for the works, artists, musicians, writers, and performers who, in the preceding year, advanced the conversation of darkness with the most integrity and vision.
Obscaerivm is built from the ground up for the margins — for the art that refuses genre, for the music that refuses compromise, and for the cultural documentation that refuses to simplify what is inherently complex.
It is not a celebration of popularity. It is a record of significance.

Grand Award · Obscaerivm
The Vanguard Seal
Dark Culture Achievement of the Year · All Disciplines
Awarded to the single work, creator, or cultural event that, in the preceding year, most powerfully defined, disrupted, or deepened what dark culture means. The Vanguard Seal crosses all disciplines — a musician, a filmmaker, a novelist, a visual artist, or a live event may receive it.
Determined by the full jury panel, it is the only award for which no public entry is required. Nomination is by curatorial decision alone.
As the body that administers Obscaerivm, we are ineligible for nomination in any category, in any edition.
Award Categories
The Eight Disciplines
Categories are organized by medium. Works are eligible for entry or nomination within their primary category only. The Vanguard Seal draws from all eight.
The 2027 edition covers works released, published, or performed during 2026.
Recorded Music
The Obsidian Record
Album of the Year
For the full-length studio release that most advanced dark music in 2026. Spanning gothic, doom, black, death, dark ambient, funeral doom, and allied forms. Judged on artistic cohesion, thematic depth, and cultural weight — not sales or chart positions.
Visual Art
The Nocturnal Canvas
Visual Art of the Year
Recognizing the finest work in dark visual arts: illustration, painting, mixed media, and digital art. Open to individual works and series. The criterion is an uncompromising vision of darkness that transcends decoration and enters the territory of urgency.
Photography
The Silver Void
Photography Award
Honoring the body of work or single image that most hauntingly captures the uncanny, the liminal, the funereal, or the sublime. Dark portraiture, gothic landscape, death culture documentation, and experimental dark photography are all in scope.
Cinematographic
The Celluloid Séance
Film & Music Video of the Year
Covering all moving image work in dark culture: feature films, short films, and music videos. Judged on visual language, directorial vision, and the degree to which the work uses the screen as its necessary and irreplaceable medium. Film and music video are evaluated within the same jury but recognized separately.
Literature
The Grimoire
Literary Work of the Year
Awarded to the finest dark literary work of the year — novels, novellas, short story collections, graphic novels, dark comics, or poetry collections. Must have been published in 2026 and demonstrate literary seriousness alongside dark thematic depth.
Live & Performed
The Dark Rite
Live Performance of the Year
Covering all forms of live dark culture: concerts, tours, festivals, theater productions, physical performance, and immersive staged experiences. The common criterion is the irreducibility of the live encounter — what happened in that room, on that night, could not have been replicated on a screen.
Editorial & Criticism
The Chronicle Pen
Cultural Writing of the Year
Recognizing the finest piece of journalism, essay, critical review, or cultural chronicle in dark culture published during 2026 — in any outlet, including our own. Writing that changed how a scene or a work was understood.
Esotericism · Folklore · Traditions
The Vestige
Dark Cultural Heritage Award
For the work, event, or creator that most meaningfully engaged with esotericism, occultism, folklore, ancestral traditions, or the archaeology of darkness — bringing historical and ritual knowledge into meaningful contemporary context. Includes exhibitions, academic works, and documentary projects.
Special Recognition
Three Further Distinctions
Beyond the eight discipline categories, three further distinctions sit outside the category structure — two decided by those who hold authority here, one belonging entirely to you.
Emerging Talent · All Disciplines
The New Shadow
Emerging Voice Award
For an artist, musician, writer, filmmaker, or photographer in the first five years of their public practice who shows exceptional originality and dark cultural vision. Open across all eight disciplines. Geography and genre are irrelevant. Only the work speaks.
Community · Readership Vote
The Congregation’s Seal
Community Choice Award
Decided entirely by our readership through public vote. Finalists are drawn from the nominations pool across all eight categories. No jury involvement. The Congregation’s Seal belongs to the community — and the community alone decides whose darkness mattered most to them this year.
Honorary · Jury Discretion
The Crypt’s Honor
Honorable Mention
The jury may award up to five Crypt’s Honor distinctions per edition — for works or creators that fell outside the winning selection but whose contribution to dark culture demands acknowledgment. These are not consolation recognitions; they are records of works the jury believes history will remember.
How It Works
The Process
A clear, contained sequence — no ambiguity, no black boxes. From the moment a work is submitted to the night the recognition is announced, every step is deliberate and documented.
01.
Open Submissions
Artists, labels, publishers, filmmakers, and readers may submit eligible works through our submission portal. All submissions are reviewed for eligibility before entering jury consideration.
02.
Editorial Nominations
Our editorial team independently nominates works it covered during 2026, ensuring that exceptional works overlooked by formal submission are not excluded from consideration.
03.
Jury Longlist
From all submissions and editorial nominations, the jury compiles a longlist of up to ten works per category. Longlisted works are announced publicly on our platform and social channels.
04.
Public Vote Opens
Once the longlist is published, the Congregation’s Seal vote opens. Our readership votes across all longlisted works for a fixed period, determining the community’s choice.
05.
Jury Shortlist
The jury deliberates independently of the public vote, reducing each category to a shortlist of three finalists. Shortlisted works are announced and profiled in depth on our editorial platform.
06.
The Ceremony
Recognition is announced at the annual ceremony in Bogotá, D.C., aligned where possible with the AExpo International Cultural Festival. The Vanguard Seal recipient is revealed last, simultaneously with publication of a dedicated Obscaerivm edition on our platform.

Obscaerivm reaches the audience that dark culture brands most want and least often access — engaged, genre-literate, and allergic to hollow commercial association. Sponsorship is not advertising. FAQ
Common Questions
Everything you need to know before submitting. If your question is not answered here, include it in the contact form and we will address it directly.
Who can submit a work to Obscaerivm?
Anyone may submit — the artist themselves, their label, publisher, manager, or a reader nominating a work they believe deserves recognition. The only requirement is that the work is genuinely eligible. We also make independent editorial nominations for works we covered during the year.
Are AI-generated works eligible?
No. All submissions must be entirely human-authored, performed, or created. Works generated in whole or in part by artificial intelligence — including text, images, music, or moving image produced via generative AI tools — are not eligible under any category in any edition of Obscaerivm.
Can a work be submitted to more than one category?
No. Each work may be submitted to one discipline category only. If a work is difficult to categorize, submit it to its primary medium. If genuinely uncertain, contact us before submitting and we will advise.
Are works from outside Colombia eligible?
Obscaerivm is an international recognition. Works from any country, in any language, are eligible. There is no geographic restriction. The award is administered from Bogotá, D.C., Colombia, but its scope is the full world of dark culture.
Is there a submission fee?
Submission is free. Obscaerivm is editorially funded. We will never charge artists or creators to be considered. If a submission fee is ever introduced for a specific tier or program, it will be clearly stated and optional — the standard submission channel will remain free.
How does the Congregation’s Seal public vote work?
Once the longlist is announced in September, a public vote opens on our platform and runs for three weeks. Any reader may vote once per edition across all longlisted works. The winner is announced at the Obscaerivm Ceremony in October.
How can a brand or organization become a sponsor?

A Living Document
Obscaerivm Will Grow
This is the foundational framework. Categories may expand as our editorial scope expands. The editorial independence of the jury, the primacy of the work over the name, and the commitment to darkness without apology — these do not change.
