The augmented reality release was the first success story of its kind, with gamers everywhere enjoying the explorative missions they have to embark on in the game. Sure, other prominent options like Candy Crush Saga and casino favorites like live blackjack understandably appeal, but Pokémon Go’s package is different. There is not a game quite like it, especially considering its meteoric rise since its first release in 2016.
The gaming sphere has seen numerous hit products eventually wane in popularity. While Niantic’s immersive product is not as popular as initially, it still has a massive population of diehard players who play the game daily. Below, we assess some key reasons for this and why Pokémon Go’s longevity is impossible to ignore.

First, the fact that players must traverse outside spaces to play the game makes Pokémon Go such a unique product. While gamers are typically associated with sedentary lifestyles, Pokémon Go bucked the trend as it forced them to leave the sofa and venture around cities and towns as they attempt to catch Pokémon and hatch eggs. With geolocation and augmented reality at the forefront, the game lets you know where you are, all while players interact with virtual elements in the real world. Numerous augmented reality games have come and gone since, proving that Pokémon Go’s offering is hard to beat.
A Simple Title
While other games require great skill and dedication, Pokémon Go’s simplicity has also aided its undeniable growth. Backed up by the fact that a diverse range of gamers enjoy the game, Pokémon Go players can load up the game practically anywhere, it is easy to catch Pokémon and take down gyms, and it does not require the same type of dedication as a detailed console product does.
Of course, the Pokémon brand is also known around the world. That has contributed to the game’s success, with this multinational behemoth already having a strong community of fans behind it. That is a benefit, but it also means that Niantic had to nail the title, given the discerning onlookers who are so familiar with the Pokémon name. They certainly managed to achieve that, though, with the app perfectly fitting the brand and leaving gaming audiences desperate to experience such a unique product.
It is Perfect for Mobile
Unless you have been living under a rock for the past decade, you will have noticed the rise of mobile gaming. It has become a saturated space, though. As such, not every game does well. However, Pokémon Go was designed with smartphone gaming’s growth in mind, with almost everyone owning a modern-day mobile and having immediate access to a genuinely innovative product. Where many people might struggle to grasp the controls on a sophisticated PlayStation 5 console, many of Pokémon Go’s features are second nature to much of society.
A Strong Social Element
Finally, in a world where people are not conversing with each other as much, Pokémon Go’s social element also makes it stand out from the crowd. Players have to interact with fellow trainers while trading Pokémon and battling against each other in a major city. Social media sites like YouTube and X are also filled with Pokémon Go-related content.
