Discover a curated list of metal-themed movies that stand out for their authenticity and entertainment value, perfect for both metal enthusiasts and newcomers alike. These films range from comedies to dramas, each capturing different facets of the metal world.

Not everyone understands our headbanging soul. And most of the time, mainstream flicks do not just cut it. We all know how metal is positioned in pop culture – misunderstood, stereotyped, maybe even a little demonized. That is completely fine though, because that means we all have these incredible metal musics all for ourselves. Okay, now, talk about movies. I still consider myself new to metal, so I was not aware that there are a lot of great metal movies out there.

I spent hours browsing the web and days watching films to actually come up with this list. Of course, I would not want to recommend movies that are not worth your time. And I am really excited to share them with you, although you have probably watched a few of them already on several streaming services. Without further ado, let us start!

Heavy Trip (2018)

Up for some comedy? Heavy Trip is that movie that will make you laugh out loud, literally. It is all about a small-town metal band called Impaled Rektum (yep, that is right). Just like most bands, these guys have been jamming in their basement for years, with hopes to earn a spot in the big stage. One random encounter changes everything – a chance to play at a massive metal festival in Norway! Suddenly, their wildest dreams seem possible.

But the road to headbanging glory is not exactly smooth. There will be stolen vans, questionable decisions – seriously, do not ask about the dead guy – and enough metal mayhem to make your head spin. If you are looking for a funny movie about metalheads on a wild adventure, Heavy Trip is definitely worth checking out. It may even take you to a trip down memory lane if you have had a band of your own in the past.

This Is Spinal Tap (1984)

It is a mockumentary, which means it pretends to be a real documentary, following a washed-up British metal band called Spinal Tap on their comeback tour of America. These guys are, well, legendary… in their own minds, at least. They have got the questionable fashion choices, the amps that go to eleven, and enough backstage blunders to make your head spin.

It is a classic for a reason, and even if you have not seen it yet, there is a good chance you have already heard some of its quotable lines (like that whole “amp goes to eleven” thing). I recommend it if you feel like having a movie night full of laughs and metal mockery. Although we recommend having a fast internet connection like Boost Infinite and other reputable plans to really enjoy the film.

Lord of the Rings (2001-2003)

Lord of the Rings is not exactly what you would picture as a metal movie, but hear me out. This epic fantasy saga has, like, everything: a tiny hobbit dude on a massive quest, epic battles against evil forces, and enough magic rings to make your head spin. Sure, it is not all mosh pits and screaming vocals, but there is a definite metal vibe to the whole thing. Facing your fears, standing up for what is right, and battling darkness – pretty metal themes, right? Plus, who would not want Gandalf as your roadie?

Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny (2006)

Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny isn’t your typical metal movie, but trust me, it is metal as heck. It is a full-on comedy starring those goofy rockers Jack Black and Kyle Gass, following their not-so-serious quest to become the greatest band in the world. These two dudes are convinced all they need is a legendary guitar pick once wielded by Satan himself.

So, naturally, they start their mission to steal it from a maximum-security rock and roll museum (security is probably not very tight there, right?). Overall, it is cheesy, it is silly, but it is also surprisingly sweet and has some great rock/metal tunes.

Deathgasm (2015)

Deathgasm is actually what happens when your favorite metal album explodes off the record player and into your living room. This New Zealand movie is about a teenage metalhead named Brodie who gets stuck living with his super religious aunt and uncle… uh-oh. But things get way more brutal than cancelled band practice when Brodie forms a band called Deathgasm with another outcast. They accidentally summon a demon with some ancient sheet music, and suddenly their small, sleepy town is crawling with possessed citizens.

This is definitely a fun movie to watch, and you would not want to spoil it with constant buffering – as what I have experienced so I had to rewatch it again. If you think your current internet is not up to the task, it is best to look into better plans like Hughesnet deals or other plans from reputable internet providers. Just a friendly advice!

Sound of Metal (2019)

If you are into musical drama, you cannot miss Sound of Metal. It is about a metal drummer named Ruben who is living the dream of any musician – touring the country with his girlfriend in their hardcore band. Unfortunately, his world starts crumbling when he starts losing his hearing. It is a brutal reality check – anger, denial, and everything in between. However, the movie does not shy away from the beauty and challenges of deafness either.

Ruben has to learn a whole new way to experience the world, and it is not always easy. This movie shows the reality of what happens to metal artists, and how common it is for these talented individuals to lose their hearing by simply doing what they love most.

Metal Lords (2022)

Metal Lords is basically a high school comedy where a metalhead’s dream comes true. It is about the story of two best buds, Kevin and Hunter, who are totally obsessed with all things metal. They wanna ditch the marching band and start their own killer metal band, but there is just one problem: they cannot find a bass player. It is about friendship, facing down the haters, and proving that anyone can rock out, even if they do not play a traditional metal instrument. It has got some hilarious moments, but it also captures the passion and energy that makes metal so awesome.

Conclusion

I truly enjoyed all the films I listed here, and I feel like you would also enjoy them as much as I did. There were also movies that I watched that did not make this list simply because I found them lacking. But I am looking forward to expanding this list soon when I find more titles to watch. It is also nice to see that there are a lot of metal films in the works in the future. Happy watching!
