The Swedish-based band Nasum has announced an expanded reissue of their 1998 debut album, ‘Inhale/Exhale.’ The new edition, titled ‘Inhaled/Exhaled/Revived,’ is scheduled for a physical release on October 24, 2025, through the American independent label Relapse Records. A comprehensive 62-track digital version of the album was made available on streaming platforms concurrently with the announcement.
This release is an archival project, as Nasum officially disbanded in 2005 following the death of frontman, guitarist, and producer Mieszko Talarczyk in the December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The new version of the album features a complete remaster of the original work, new remixes of select tracks, previously unreleased material from the original recording sessions, and re-imagined cover art.
The project serves as a historical document of the band’s formative full-length recording. The title itself signals the nature of the reissue; the original two-part action of ‘Inhale/Exhale’ is appended with ‘Revived,’ indicating a restoration and expansion of the source material.
A Chronology of Nasum
Nasum was formed in Örebro, Sweden, in late 1992 by Anders Jakobson and Rickard Alriksson as a side project from their primary band, Necrony. The band’s stated intention was to create politically charged grindcore in the tradition of Napalm Death. Mieszko Talarczyk joined on guitar in 1993, becoming a principal songwriter and creative force. After a series of demos and split EPs, Alriksson departed in 1995, with Jakobson moving from guitar to drums.
The band signed with Relapse Records for its debut, ‘Inhale/Exhale.’ Following its release, the lineup expanded in 1999 with the addition of bassist Jesper Liveröd. This configuration released two more studio albums: ‘Human 2.0’ (2000) and ‘Helvete (2003).’ After Liveröd’s departure in 2003, he was replaced by Jon Lindqvist, who performed on the band’s final studio album, ‘Shift’ (2004). During this period, Nasum undertook international tours across Europe, North America, and Japan.
The band’s career ended abruptly on December 26, 2004, when Mieszko Talarczyk was killed in the tsunami that struck Southeast Asia while he was on vacation in Thailand. His death was officially confirmed on February 17, 2005, at which point the surviving members announced the dissolution of Nasum.
Posthumous releases included the ‘Grind Finale’ compilation (2006) and the ‘Doombringer’ live album (2008). In 2012, the surviving members reunited for a one-off global tour to commemorate the band’s 20th anniversary, with vocals performed by Keijo Niinimaa of the Finnish band Rotten Sound. The final performance took place in Stockholm on October 6, 2012.
‘Inhaled/Exhaled/Revived’ Archival Release
‘Inhaled/Exhaled/Revived’ is structured as a multi-part collection. The core of the release is a new 2025 remaster of the 38 tracks that constituted the original 1998 album.
This is supplemented by 14 new remixes, seven previously unreleased songs recorded during the initial sessions between December 1997 and January 1998, and an industrial remix of the title track by an artist credited as Seven Trees. The physical editions also feature re-imagined cover artwork, a process overseen by Nasum’s founding member, Anders Jakobson.

The full 62-track collection is divided into four parts. The first part consists of the complete 2025 remaster of the original 38-track album, from ‘This Is…’ to ‘Can De Lach.’ This is followed by a section of 14 remixed tracks, including new versions of key songs such as the title track, ‘Digging In,’ and ‘Tested.’
The third part of the collection unearths seven previously unreleased songs from the original recording sessions: ‘Truth Fed Through a Tube,’ ‘Need Some…,’ ‘Dark Thoughts,’ ‘Bullshit Tradition,’ ‘Device,’ ‘The Real,’ and ‘Rio De San Atlanta, Manitoba.’
The release is rounded out by a fourth part containing an industrial remix of ‘Inhale/Exhale’ by Seven Trees.
The Architect of the Sound: Dan Swanö
The remastering and remixing for the reissue were handled by the Swedish musician and producer Dan Swanö. Swanö’s involvement creates a direct link to the album’s origins, as he was credited with editing and pre-mastering on the original 1998 release.
Swanö has been a prominent figure in the Swedish extreme metal scene since the late 1980s. He is known for his work as a multi-instrumentalist in influential bands, most notably the progressive death metal group Edge of Sanity and the death metal collective Bloodbath.
His extensive production and engineering career includes credits on albums by internationally recognized acts such as Opeth, Katatonia, and Therion. He operated the Unisound studio, where Nasum conducted early recording sessions.
‘Inhale/Exhale’ Original Work
Released on May 26, 1998, ‘Inhale/Exhale’ was Nasum’s first full-length studio album. The tracks were recorded between December 1997 and January 1998 at Soundlab Studios in Örebro, Sweden, and produced by the band with Mathias Färm and Per Lindberg.

Upon its release, the album was a notable work within the grindcore genre, a style of extreme music characterized by high-speed tempos, short song structures, and politically charged lyrics.
It has been documented by music journalists as a key release that contributed to a revitalization of the international grindcore scene during a period of perceived downturn in the late 1990s.
The album has also been cited as a direct influence on the genre’s originators, the British band Napalm Death, who reportedly were encouraged by ‘Inhale/Exhale’ to return to a more traditional grindcore style on their subsequent work.
The Label: Relapse Records
Relapse Records is an American independent record label founded in 1990 by Matthew F. Jacobson, initially operating out of his parents’ basement in Aurora, Colorado. Now based in Upper Darby Township, Pennsylvania, the label has specialized in various forms of extreme music for over three decades, establishing a reputation as a pioneer in grindcore and death metal.
Since its foundation, the label has released albums by a number of foundational artists within these subgenres, including early work from Suffocation, Deceased, and Incantation. Over the years, its roster has expanded to include a wide range of influential acts that have pushed creative boundaries, such as the sludge metal of Mastodon, the mathcore of The Dillinger Escape Plan, and the post-metal of Neurosis.
The label has also maintained a documented history of managing and reissuing the back catalogs of significant artists, most notably through its comprehensive and deluxe re-releases of the catalog of the pioneering death metal band Death.
